OUGD503 SECRET 7 - DEVELOPED IDEAS & FEEDBACK

Initial digital designs were created following on from the initial sketches, to see how they work in colour and on a correct scale.

Jack Garratt - Worry

Contrasting medias were used to highlight the two different sides. The background on the right is a close up photograph of my own arm, making it look humanlike, especially combined with the photograph of the heart. The photograph was taken off the internet as I couldn't find my own photographs of a heart I dissected for a previous brief during my A Levels. However on the other side the moon is produced digitally with a photograph of a painting of the stars as the background.

A photograph of a close up of my hoody was used for the background for the heart side of the circle, as the colours work a lot better with the rest of the piece, and this shows a different way of representing the human form.

This is another photograph of my clothing, however in a much darker shade to contrast more with the other side of the circle.

This is the original sketch of this design, drawn more accurately in order to trace it digitally.

This is the above drawing digitalised, in a very sleek, stylised appearance, only using opposing colours to highlight the different sections of this piece. This looks much more finished than the previous digital mock up, however the contrast between the two halves isn't as clear as previously, as it;s produced in the same mediums.

Background colours experimented.

Background and moon colours experimented to make it look more even.

This piece was produced in response to the song itself, following the beat in a free way, using motions that reflected the beat of the song. I think it has a really free appearance, although not one which reflects the song itself very well in style.

This piece was also done following the beat of the song, however using a much more controlled approach, following the main beat of the song rather than the song as a whole, which produced a much more controlled response, one that looks more formulated and reflects the track much better in style mainly by the use of colour.

This piece follows part of the lyrics of the track "as if I haven't felt your breath with every step i take as the wind blows", with wind with little women on it. It was really hard to show wind without it looking like water.

The above piece was refined so that it looked a lot more like wind, and the women scattered around randomly. I quite like the use of the colour blue for the wind, as although this is an accurate colour for wind, this makes the piece look as if it is for the track Clearest Blue instead, which adds a bit of confusion to the piece which I like.

Two were combined just to see the effect.

This was reflected as I thought the blue would create a better base colour, giving it more of a firm grounding. I'm not sure about this combination though as it has no reason to be this way, and the aesthetic doesn't justify this.

This was supposed to show the "pieces you left" with worries written on them, to reflect what the woman has left behind and things she worries about in a clear yet photographic way.

I envisioned this on a pink background, however I didn't have one at the time so tried simulating it digitally and as you can see it really doesn't look great.

The worries were placed on the wind women, combining the two aspects of the song together.

Again on the beat of the song, which improves the aesthetic as you can't see so much of the painting, making it more abstract.

It was also placed on the other beat painting, however this makes it look too complicated and takes away from the beauty of the painting.

CHVRCHES - Clearest Blue

This design shows two people meeting on a path, one in shadow and the other in daylight. They are off to one side, as this follows the lyrics to meet her more than half way. This is a very simple birds eye view, which is ambiguous so you have to really look and think about what it could be, and even then it could be lots of different things.

Different colour scheme to show it in night time.

Combination of two colour schemes to highlight one coming out of the shadows and into the light.

A photograph of grass was using with colour filters to show the same design, only adding a slightly more realistic touch, to give a bit more context and mixed textures to the piece.

Different coloured shade section. Looks a bit dull.

More of a filter was applied to give a techno style which better reflected the style of the track.

Filter applied to regular photograph to highlight the two different sides.

Abstract colours, highlighting darkness and night time again.

Another colour combination.

Grass photograph on the left with concrete path photograph on the right, which contrast against the block colour aspects.

Imaged traced path and grass to see a different aesthetic. This gives it a more pop art effect, however still highlights the contrasting aspects to the piece.

Feedback:
I posted a select few designs on the courses Facebook group to get some feedback on the designs I'd come up with so far, and got very reassuring and directing comments.
The wind and women illustration which I feared may look like water and waves instead of wind, was commented that it does look like wind, however there was slight confusion over the song it represented, and because of the colour people thought it was for CHVRCHES - Clearest Blue because of the blue colour of the wind, however it's for Jack Garratt's Worry instead. This may not be an issue as it could add intrigue into the piece, and it's sometimes interesting to not give away the track clearly, but to get people to think.
The track design that was most liked by people was 7th design down for Clearest Blue, as perhaps it was more clear what it was of, but still quite ambiguous with contrasting elements to it.
Following on from feedback received by my peers, I will pursue with these ideas, refining them until I am satisfied. I will also produce the half heart half moon design in paper cut or acrylic, to see if this design works in the media I have imagined for it.
I will not be pursuing with initial ideas for the Dream 3 track, although I thought this would be the least entered track, purely because ideas for the other two tracks are turning out quite well and I simply don't have time available.
